‘A lesbian character? WHY NOT!’ (BT,Mum,06Nov08,P1)
Priyanka Chopra gives her hottest, boldest, most revealing interview after a series of Bollywood hits and misses

I’ve been struck by a thunderbolt. Doctors have diagnosed it as ‘Metallica’. I see only ‘metal’ everywhere. It’s a new ‘viralling’ phenomenon called ‘Priyanka-itis’. Read: Priyanka Chopra. Confounded? Well, here goes. PC in a silver dress at the BT party; PC in a gold swimsuit in Karan Johar’s Dostana; PC’s fashionably ‘steely’ gaze. Can’t blame me for being so struck.

She laughed infectiously when I told her. “You see, I like playing different characters on-screen; in real life I try being as much ‘me’ as possible. The character, the film, the location – were all right. And in this case it wasn’t so much the swimsuit being tailored for me as me being inspired by the swimsuit. Manish (Malhotra) got hold of this stunning gold swimwear and I was so floored that I worked at getting into it, the rest is history.”

Making history was more likely, with the world’s men suffering from ‘goldeneye’, And yet, the hottie looked wholesome and bootilicious, pouring into it like a catwoman. A far cry from all recent talk about ‘size zero’.

She arched a gorgeous eyebrow, “Honestly, I don’t know what ‘size zero’ is. I don’t believe in ‘zero’. I believe in plusses. What is a zero? I eat my khakras, I love my butter naans, chicken tikkas and desserts. I’m a roti, kapda, makaan type of person. I enjoy life, I eat well – of course, I workout, but not at the cost of sacrificing my pleasures. I believe Indian women are blessed with wholesome, voluptuous bodies and are meant to be that way. No zeroes for me, the fuller the better. I’m a Punjabi girl yaar.”

Hmmnn! Desi girl sure had the sparks flying. Was her ‘hottie’ proclamation an answer to Kareena’s Tashan sensation. “Not at all. Dostana is different. My competition is with myself. I try to be as different as possible in all my films. I was appreciated in Don. In Fashion I’ve done different stuff which has been appreciated. And in Dostana, I wore a swimsuit and rose from the sea ‘coz it was different too.”

Of course, her heroes playing ‘gay’ must’ve made her feel safer? She’d probably discarded her bodyguard and insurance? She laughed sexily. “Like I said, I try to do as many edgy films as possible. Talking of bodyguards, post Drona I think Abhishek and I switched roles. But in this one he seemed more interested in John’s body. Haha! Still, I’ll consider the thought. And insurance is always a good idea.”

Would she play gay too if her role ever demanded it? “Why not? I would toy with the idea of playing a lesbian character if the role was well written and the script was rock solid. I’m all for equality and gay rights anyway.”

Solid views from a rock solid actress. But how much was she rocked by the failure of her (reel) Love Story 2050? Would she comment on her real love story with Harman Baweja now?

She smiled, “I don’t like making a spectacle of my private life. I may be a public personality but I’m a very private person. Harman is a very special friend and that’s all I’ll say now. When I’m ready for it, I will announce it with the kind of dignity and pride it deserves.” Bravo Priyanka, but honestly, I still wouldn’t let my five-year-old niece in New York (obsessed with Priyanka ever since she’d seen the Aaj ki raat number’) watch Dostana; and PC’s breathtaking sexiness. Priyanka, who’s met the child, burst out laughing, “I’ll send her an edited DVD!”

But we all know, who’s gonna keep that, huh?

The life and times of Aamir Khan (BT,Mum,06Nov08,P2)
The actor’s reel life is a take off from his real, explores Superstar Superlives, in a series on Zoom

Did you know that actor Aamir Khan was an ace lawn tennis player who had represented Mahrashtra at the nationals? In fact, the elusive Khan headed a rock band in his Bombay Scottish days. Surprised? Well, hold on to your awe for a while. For Aamir Khan promises lots more! Shy and introvert, Aamir dabbled in cinema at a young age. His inclinations notwithstanding, Aamir, for a long time, was unsure of his goals in life.

However, once decided, no one could budge the chocolate-faced boy next door. Irrespective of his personal ambitions or professional commitments, Aamir saw it through till the very end. Superstar Superlatives on Zoom focuses on Aamir’s firm determination, his cinematic sense, his flops and his subsequent dramatic rise to the success story he has created today.

The child actor, who made his first appearance before the camera in his father Tahir Hussein’s film, Yaadon Ki Barat, his fear of film sets, fascination for kites, an unsuccessful marriage to childhood love Reena Dutt and finally finding happiness with present wife, Kiran Rao, the journey that the series sketches reveals a man stirred by his acute sense of observation and aesthetic skills.

The perfectionist had his share of pitfall to the verge where he once thought of quitting the film industry. His very public separation with Reena left him traumatic and vulnerable. However, he bore it with stoic dignity, when critics lashed out at him for his Mangal Pandey debacle and his separation.

That’s not all! Aamir received a lot of flak for ‘ghost directing’ his films. But he shut his critics with his exceptional directorial skills. “Aamir was exemplary in his shot angles and script sense. Need we say he was born to be a director and a legendary one at that!” says director Mahesh Bhatt. As Aamir himself says in Dil Chahata Hai, “It’s tough to perfect perfectionism.” However this is just the prelude.

Preity goes around the world! (BT,Mum,06Nov08,P36)

If you guys are wondering where’s Preity Zinta these days? Here it is. Off late she has had a rather tight schedule travelling from one place to another.

A close friend of the actress said, “Preity just offered prayers and sought blessings at Vaishnodevi (she makes it a point to visit the temple every year). Then she air dashed to New Delhi to address a press conference. After addressing the press in Delhi, Preity flew down to Bangkok for another press conference once again. Hmm... sounds like a pucca business woman in the making!

Hrithik: Hunky or scary? (BT,Mum,06Nov08,P36)

.

Amir Khan isn’t the only actor experimenting with his hair and look… Even Salman Khan is having a tress-ful time with Veer, and then there is the gorgeous hunk, Hrithik Roshan, who has experimented with his looks for papa Rakesh Roshan’s film Kites. Hrithik has been spotted with long curly auburn-streaked hair, and a stubble. And the new look has been getting mixed response.

While some claim that he is looking hotter than before, some women folk seem to think that his charm has been lost somewhere in the ‘nest’ of his! But since this new hairdo is for his film Kites, there’s no scheduled visit to the barber in the offing. Now, love it or hate it, but wifey Sussanne claims to have lost her dil to hubby all over again… thanks to his new look. Good or bad, Hrithik always manages to woo the audience, and we are sure he’ll have some surprises in store for his fans once again.
